Bicycle Infographic Links Health and Environment

For Americans nearing the end of one of the hottest summers on record, the idea of commuting across town on a bicycle might seem a little crazy, but it’s actually the perfect time to get your bike tuned up for fall riding. What’s more, the U.S. habit of climbing into our 4-wheeled air conditioned boxes to get everywhere we need to go may be killing us in more ways than one.

Inactivity-related diseases are the number 1 killer in the United States, but adding 30 minutes of daily exercise – possibly by bicycle – can save an average of $544 per person per year in health costs – that savings represents better health and less pollution! On top of the health savings, bicyclists save money on gas, parking and automobile maintenance. According to at least one study, bicyclists also save time during rush hour when they can actually out-pace cars in urban areas.
